In Michigan, Defamation, in legal terms, consists of: a false and defamatory statement concerning a plaintiff; an unprivileged communication to a third party; fault amounting at least to negligence on the part of the publisher, and; either actionability of the statement irrespective of special harm (defamation per se) or the existence of special harm cause by publication.
In plain and simple language, defamation is a statement by the defendant which invades the reputation and good name of the plaintiff. There are two types of defamation: slander and libel.
